The 2017 BMW 5 Series Touring has been revealed,
adding a more practical option to the 5er line-up when it arrives in European
showrooms this June.
Measuring 4943 mm long, 1868 mm wide and 1498 mm
tall, the new 5 Series Touring is 36 mm longer, 8 mm wider and 10 mm taller
than the previous-generation, while the wheelbase is 7 mm longer at 2975 mm.
The new 5 Series wagon is up to 100 kg lighter
than the model it replaces thanks to the new platform shared with the sedan.
Behind the rear seats is a 570L boot which expands to 1700L with the second row folded flat. Like the
current-generation, the 5 Series Touring features a separately opening rear
window which provides quick access to the luggage area.
The new 5 Series Touring picks up the same
infotainment and driver assistance upgrades as the sedan, including a
semi-autonomous steering and lane control assistance (up to 210 km/h), remote
parking assistant, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with gesture
control, wireless phone charging and Apple CarPlay, along with full-LED
headlights with integrated daytime-running lights. From launch the wagon will
be offered with just four turbocharged engines – two petrol and two diesel.
Kicking off the petrol-powered range is the 530i
Touring, which utilises a 2.0-litre turbo four pot developing 252 Hp and 350 Nm,
mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.
0-100 km/h sprint takes 6.5 seconds, on its way to an electronically-limited top
speed of 250 km/h.
Next up is the 540i xDrive Touring, which gets a
3.0-litre turbo six producing a meatier 340 Hp of power and 450 Nm of torque,
sending drive to all-four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. The extra punch
cuts the 0-100 km/h time to 5.1 seconds, with the top speed
electronically-limited to 250 km/h.
First up for the oilers is the 520d Touring, powered
by a 190 Hp/400 Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, mated to a standard
six-speed manual, or optional eight-speed auto driving the rear wheels. It
takes 8.0 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill, and pulls all the way to
230 km/h (225 km/h auto).
Rounding out the engine line-up is the 530d, which
is offered in both rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive versions. Under
the bonnet is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel producing 265 Hp of power
and 620 Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic. The six-cylinder diesel goes from 0-100 km/h in 5.8
seconds, or 5.6 seconds with xDrive, and has a top speed electronically-limited
to 250 km/h.
