The 2017 Honda Civic Type R first units have arrived in
the US. Honda JasonPro has posted images of the all-new Honda Civic Type R
captured in Baltimore, USA.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R is the first-ever Civic
Type R that will officially go on sale in the U.S. market. Positioned above the
Honda Civic Si, it competes with the VW Golf R, Ford Focus RS and Subaru WRX
STI stateside.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R features major upgrade
over the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback for its hot-hatch driving dynamics. The
Type R variant has exclusive spring, damper and bush settings, a new Dual-Axis
front suspension setup with aluminium lower arms and steering knuckles that
offer improved cornering and reduced torque steer; a new four-wheel Adaptive
Suspension System with three-chamber dampers; a retuned and adaptive
dual-pinion electric power steering system with variable gear ratio; and a
helical limited-slip front differential. The Civic Type R’s body is more rigid
than the standard Civic.
Under the hood, there’s a U.S.-built 2.0-litre
i-VTEC turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 306 hp at 6,500
rpm and 400 Nm torque from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. Power is sent
to 20-inch wheels, which are shod with 245/30R Continental ContiSportConact 6
performance tyres via a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission with rev
matching capability. Honda is yet to announce the performance figures, but a 0-100
km/h sprint time of under 5.7 seconds (of the previous-gen model) is expected
from the car.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R is the world’s fastest
FWD production car with a record Nurburgring lap time of 7 minutes 43.80
seconds. The driver can select from three drive modes: Comfort, Sport and +R,
which adjust the car’s dampers, steering, throttle response, transmission, VSA
and traction control systems. Brembo front brakes with drilled 350 mm rotors and rear brakes with solid 305 mm provide
the much-needed stopping power.
LED headlights, LED fog lights, LED brake lights,
LED turn signals, high-bolstered sport seats with red/black suede-effect
fabric, leather steering wheel, sport/racing pedals, leather-wrapped gearshift
knob, Display Auto infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto and 540-watt, 12-speaker premium audio system are the equipment
highlights of the 2017 Honda Civic Type R.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R will go on sale in the
U.S. market in June 2017 with a price in the mid-US$ 30,000 range.
