Yamaha has released the 2018 Yamaha X-Max 400 maxi-scooter
in Europe, which like the 2017 Suzuki Burgmann 400 ABS, is designed for the urban commuter. With the X-Max, Yamaha
has a scooter in almost every capacity in the “Max” range, from 125 cc right up
to the half-litre class.
Carrying a 395 cc, single-cylinder, DOHC engine that
is Euro 4 compliant, the X-Max 400 is claimed by Yamaha to put out 32 hp at
7,000 rpm and 36 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Fed by EFI, the X-Max 400 uses, as
is the norm for scooters, a CVT transmission with belt final drive.
Rolling on a 15-inch wheel in front and 13-incher at
the back end, the X-Max 400 is grabbed by twin hydraulic disc brakes, with
identical 267 mm diameter discs at the front wheel and a single 267 mm disc in
the rear. Fuel capacity is 13-litres, and wet weight for this Yamaha
maxi-scooter is 210 kg.
ABS is standard for the X-Max 400, as it is for any
motorcycle and scooter sold in Europe from the beginning of this year. An added
bonus as standard fitment is the Yamaha Traction Control System (TCS), which
reduces rear wheel power when wheel slip is detected.
Underneath the seat a storage compartment is
provided, along with a courtesy light. Although no capacity for the storage
space is provided, Yamaha says it will accommodate two full-face helmets, or an
A4-sized bag. To ease rider fitting on the X-Max 400, the handlebar adjusts to
two positions.
Seat height on the X-Max is set at 800 mm, and there
is LED lighting front and rear, along with a two-position tool-adjusted
windscreen. The Smart Key keyless ignition system on the X-Max allows for the
rider to get-on-and-go, as well as locating the scooter using the remote, and
accessing the under seat storage, while a parking brake makes stopping and
parking on uneven surfaces easier easier.
In Europe, the 2018 Yamaha X-Max 400 comes in three
colour choices – Phantom Blue, Sonic Grey and Blazing Grey, while no official
pricing has been released as yet.
