Even though Lexus unveiled their fifth-generation LS
flagship all the way back in January, we've definitely had to wait a while to
get any sort of first impressions for it, let alone pricing and specs. Based on
the automaker's premium rear-wheel drive platform, the new LS is considerably
larger than its predecessor, while logging around less weight and plenty more
on-board tech and safety features.
Whether you go for the LS 500 or the LS
500h version, you'll be driving a car that's capable of
accelerating to 100 km/h in under 5.5 seconds. The LS 500h needs 5.4
seconds to be precise, while the LS 500 in RWD configuration will manage 4.5
seconds.
If you want your luxury Japanese saloon to look like
speed is constantly on its mind, the F Sport package is definitely the way to
go. Not only does it provide handling enhancements, you also get exclusive
20" alloys, larger front and rear brakes plus other chassis enhancements.
If you've got your eyes on the petrol-powered model
and not the hybrid, you can also add the Performance Package on top of the F
Sport pack, which in turn will land you Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS),
Active Rear Steering and Active Stabilizer.
In terms of safety, the all-new Lexus LS was
designed better handle the four main causes of traffic fatalities: accidents
related to pedestrians, vehicle departures from roads, intersections and
rear-end collisions. With the Advanced package, you get all of the above plus
Pedestrian Alert, Active Steering Assist, Front Lateral Side PCS, Lane Trace
Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Alert and Road Sign Assist.
As for connectivity, the complimentary Lexus Enform
App Suite 2.0 app will allow users access to their favorite mobile applications
using the vehicle's center console display - apps such as NPR One, Pandora,
iHeartRadio, Slacker and Yelp. Thanks to the LS' 4G LTE wi-fi, up to five
devices can be connected. Also on offer is a 4 GB complimentary trail.
Lexus Enform Safety
Connect is available for the first 10 years. Here, you get a functional
Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision
Notification and Stolen Vehicle Notification. It's a 24/7/365 service.
With a base price of US$ 75,000 in the U.S., the
all-new Lexus LS is cheaper to purchase than rivals such as the BMW 7-Series or the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
