With General Motors shutting down its manufacturing
operations in Australia, the Holden brand has been consigned to simply
importing and re-badging existing GM products from other markets.
Holden begs to differ. It's working on bringing the
new Chevy Equinox to the Australian market, and is running them around town
wearing camouflage wraps. But not just any old camouflage.
Instead GM's Aussie brand has brought in local
entertainer Natalie Bassingthwaighte (and her fashion label Chi Khi) to design
a special wrap just for the Equinox, and is encouraging fans to snap photos of
the vehicles running around Melbourne and upload them to social media. Just
what the point is, we're not sure, but we can hardly blame the automaker for
trying to drum up some excitement for the new SUV's arrival.
Holden notes that SUVs outsold passenger cars for
the first time in Australia over the first six months of this year. Once the
Equinox joins the portfolio, the (GMC) Acadia will follow suit in 2018.
