Fans looking to get their hands on the 2018 Jeep
Wrangler just got another option as JLWanglerForums reports the company has
begun accepting orders for models equipped with the turbocharged 2.0-liter
four-cylinder engine.
The engine reportedly costs an additional US$ 1,000 but
it requires the eight-speed automatic transmission which increases the overall
price to US$ 3,000. That’s a significant amount of change considering the
inline-four produces 270 hp and 399 Nm of torque. This
means the engine has less horsepower than the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6
which develops 285 hp and 352 Nm of torque.
Fuel economy numbers haven’t been released for the
four-cylinder but the engine should be the more eco-friendly option as it
features an eTorque system. At the model’s unveiling, Jeep said the system has
a variety of hybrid functions including electric power assist and an extended
fuel shut-off system which allows the engine and fuel flow to be “turned off
during stops, coasting or when the engine is decelerating. The model also has
regenerative braking and intelligent battery charging technology.
The turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be
available on all Wrangler variants and it appears the most affordable model
will start at US$ 29,995 before the US$ 1,195 destination charge is factored in. Of
course, the engine many fans are waiting for won’t arrive until 2019. The
3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 is slated to produce 260 hp and 598
Nm of torque. It will be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a
four-wheel drive system.
