The second-generation Mercedes CLA has been spied up
close while making a pit stop to be refueled. The front fascia is heavily
camouflaged but its design will likely mimic the all-new A-Class which is
currently on display in Geneva. That’s where the styling similarities end as
the CLA adopts a rakish windscreen and a sporty roofline which echoes the CLS.
The CLS inspired styling continues at the rear as
both models have a similar dual exhaust system and taillight design. However, a
closer inspection reveals the lights are a little different on the CLA as they
have a diagonal pattern for the reverse lights.
While the current CLA has been criticized for having
a less than luxurious interior, designers will likely address the issue by
installing a cabin that is similar to the A-Class. As a result, we can expect
higher quality materials, an improved design and modern technology. Highlights
will likely include a new three-spoke steering wheel, turbine-style air vents
and a digital instrument that measures up to 10.25-inches.
Engine options should also carryover from the
A-Class and may include a 1.33-liter four-cylinder with 163 PS and 250
Nm of torque. We can also expect a turbocharged 2.0-liter
four-cylinder developing 224 PS and 350 Nm of torque.
Buyers looking for something more powerful will have
a couple of options including a new AMG-tuned CLA 35 with a turbocharged
2.0-liter four-cylinder that develops around 300 PS. There will also
be a more powerful CLA 45 that could produce more than 400 PS.
