Our first look at Volvo’s upcoming 2019 S60 saloon
comes courtesy of company CEO Hakan Samuelsson, who tweeted an image of a
camouflaged prototype performing winter tests in Norway. He obviously couldn’t
say much, seen as how we’re still months away from the model’s official
unveiling, this summer in South Carolina. The image does however provide us
with small pieces of information, such as the presence of U.S.-spec headlights.
We wouldn’t read too much into those blacked-out
wheels though, since those are the same type of wheels Volvo used while crash
testing the new V60 – so they’re not as intricate as other wheel designs
introduced on the wagon model.
Otherwise, the front fascia design on this prototype
appears identical to the one unveiled by the new V60, which was to be expected.
The two cars will share not just the same type of styling or the same scalable
product architecture, but probably also the same engine range, comprised of
petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid units.
The latter two, a T6 and a T8, should therefore
produce 340 PS and 390 PS respectively, if they are to mirror the specs found
on the V60. The only real unknown when it comes to the S60, concerns its
rearward styling. Aside from the larger S90 model’s styling, we really don’t
have anything else to go on when speculating about what the new car could look
like.
