Mahindra unveiled the Mahindra Rexton (G4 SsangYong
Rexton) at Auto Expo 2018 last month. The company is yet to confirm the name. Some media outlets refer to is as the Mahindra XUV700. The upcoming Mahindra SUV was spotted road
testing as revealed by the spy shots published by Autocar India.
The Mahindra Rexton is just a rebadged fourth-gen
SsangYong Rexton, with a design a little more akin to original Mahindra models.
It is distinguished with a unique radiator grille comprising six vertical
chrome slats and featuring a gloss black frame, and a full-width chrome stripe
above this grille. The test mule is not the Mahindra-badged model, but the
original SsangYong model sold internationally.
The G4 SsangYong Rexton is available in 5- and
7-seat versions. Mahindra has decided to bring the 7-seat version to India. The
Mahindra Rexton is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that develops 178 bhp
and 420 Nm of torque. A 7-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD system are
confirmed, but there’s no word on the availability of a 6-speed manual
transmission.
Mahindra will import the Rexton from South Korea in
CKD form. Assembly of the SUV’s CKD kits will take place at the Chakan plant.
SsangYong will start exporting the CKDs in the third quarter of this year. The
Mahindra Rexton will compete with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour
and Isuzu MU-X.
