Volkswagen has shown a handful of Tiguan GTE
concepts over the years and it appears the model is finally headed for
production. While the crossover isn’t as sporty or as rugged as the original
concepts, the production model bears a striking resemblance to the Tiguan
R-Line. However, there are handful of unique touches which separate the GTE
from the mainstream model.
The most noticeable change is the addition of
C-shaped LED daylight running lights which have become a hallmark of Volkswagen
models with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. These unique lights have previously
shown up on the Golf GTE and Passat GTE.
Besides the distinctive lighting units, the
crossover has PHEV badging on the front fenders, tailgate and grille. Speaking
of the latter, the grille hides a charging port behind a retractable cover
which is located beside the Volkswagen logo.
The Tiguan could be
equipped with a revised interior that includes an assortment of blue accents.
We can also expect a revised infotainment system which provides hybrid specific
driving information.
Motivation will likely be provided by the same
powertrain that resides in the Golf GTE. It consists of a 1.4-liter TSI
four-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. If the
Tiguan GTE concept is any indication, the model could have a combined output of
218 PS. This may enable the crossover to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.1 seconds before reaching a top speed of 200 km/h.
Of course, the real advance of a plug-in hybrid is
the fact it can be driven on electricity for short distances. In EV mode, the
concept could travel could travel up to 50 km and hit speeds of up
to 130 km/h.
