Paultan's spies have managed to capture the
second-generation Audi A1 again, this time with a lot less camouflage than on
previous prototypes. The new A1 replaces the original that first broke cover in
2010, and is expected to ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform (also used
for the Seat Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo).
Design-wise, the A1 has undergone as significant
evolution from the outgoing model although the silhouette looks like be very
familiar. The front features a wider Singleframe grille and an aggressive lower
apron – the latter could point towards an S line styling package. The sharper
headlamps are also new, with this mule being fitted with halogen units.
At the back, the twin tailpipes and bumper design
are another hint we are looking at an S line-equipped A1. The taillights also
sport a Y-shaped graphic design within them, while the clusters themselves
match the rest of the car’s angular cues.
It has been rumoured the new A1 will only be offered
as a five-door “Sportback” model, with the three-door version being dropped.
Engines should include a base 1.0 litre three-cylinder, with a larger 1.5 litre
unit available higher up the range. Should there be a high-performance S1, a
2.0 TSI from the Polo GTI might be the engine of choice.
