Genesis took to New York in order to present U.S. buyers with the new 2019 G70 performance sedan, slotting in below the G80, G80 Sport and flagship G90.

In order to make sure it can compete with the likes of the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, Genesis tested the G70 in some of the world’s most challenging environments, ranging from Death Valley to Northern Sweden, and Nurburgring Nordschleife.

U.S buyers will be able to choose between three powertrain configurations and five trim packages, ranging from the Advanced spec to the flagship Sport model. Two engines will be available in a 252 HP 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder and a 365 HP 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6, with rear wheel drive as standard and AWD optional.

And if the overall design and powertrains seem familiar, that’s because you’ve seen them before, albeit with Kia’s tiger nose and other styling cues, in the Stinger.

Either engine can be spec’d with an 8-speed automatic with standard steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters, while an optional 6-speed manual can be had with the 2.0T RWD model aimed at driving-oriented enthusiasts. However, it’s only the automatic versions that feature a launch control system.

Furthermore, there will be five available driving modes, adjusting everything from powertrain response to steering weight, engine sound, all-wheel drive torque distribution and suspension firmness. Models equipped with the Dynamic Package also gain a mechanical limited slip differential, while 3.3T Sport versions offer an electronically controlled suspension – though if that’s not enough, buyers can also pay extra for the optional high-performance Brembo brakes with fixed calipers (for-piston front, two-piston rear).

Standard safety features on the G70 include Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, and Driver Attention Warning.

The 2019 Genesis G70 will land at U.S. retailers this summer, available in the following eight exterior colors: Victoria Black, Casablanca White, Himalayan Grey, Santiago Silver, Adriatic Blue, Mallorca Blue, Havana Red and Siberian Ice.
