Earlier this year, reports surfaced with regards to BMW’s intentions, or better yet lack of, to build all-new replacements for their i3 and i8 models. Yet, if the i3 does eventually make a generational shift, could it look anything like this digital drawing by designer Joost Bianchi? As far as we’re concerned, it depends on what direction BMW might want to take with the car and whether or not they would open up the cabin to allow for more passenger room.
These renderings clearly show a more futuristic approach to the i3, while keeping the design of the car instantly recognizable – at least when looking at its profile. The artist eventually settled on a more streamlined exterior, opting to go with thin horizontal taillights over more conventional ones, and a sleek front fascia that sort of reminds us of the current car, although made to look more futuristic.

One very interesting feature on this car is the door mechanism, which sees the front door slide forward all the way to the bumper, and the rear door ever so slightly backward. It’s ideal for making entering and exiting the vehicle as effortless as possible, turning an already practical vehicle into something that much more special.

In the end though, if the BMW i3 does make it to a second-generation, that will be a victory in and of itself.
