A BMW M2 Competition has been rumoured for
some time now, and the upgraded M2 has now leaked online via BMW Australia,
captured by CarAdvice, which tips the car’s launch to be in Beijing later this
month.
There’s a more powerful engine to match the baby M’s
extra sporting cues, which only fans might notice at a glance. Let’s start with
the looks – the most obvious Competition cue is on the front lip, which gets
three additional vents, and black frames for the kidney
grille.
On the flanks are M4-style wing mirrors (standard
BMW items on the regular M2) and multi-spoke rims in a never seen before
design. The sole interior pic here shows that BMW has addressed one downside of
the F87 M2. The standard car comes with rather uninspiring normal BMW seats,
replaced by M4-style front chairs here with M2 logo inserts. We also see carbon
trim on the centre tunnel.
It’s not just more show though, as the M2
Competition packs more horses and torque from a new engine. The motor in
question is the 3.0 litre twin-turbo S55 from the M3 and M4, slightly detuned
here to make 405 hp and 550 Nm of torque. In the regular M2 sits the
single-turbo N55B30T0, which is a regular series 3.0 litre BMW engine upgraded
with components and features from the M3/M4 motor. It makes 370 hp and 465 Nm
(500 Nm on overboost), so the Competition gets a substantial jump.
Doing transmission duties is a seven-speed
dual-clutch auto gearbox – no word yet of a manual, which can be had with the
standard M2. 0-100 km/h is quoted at 4.2 seconds, a tenth quicker than the M
DCT-equipped M2.
