MW Motors has taken the wraps off their new Luka
electric vehicle. Billed as the “first production car to use in-wheel hub
motors,” the Luka has a retro design that recalls a handful of different
models. Starting up front, we can see circular LED lighting units, a chrome
front bumper and a horizontal grille which appears to draw some inspiration
from BMW.
The car’s profile reveals front fender vents, an
angular windscreen and a steeply sloping roof which meets a compact rear
window. Other styling details include a sloped trunk and an Aston Martin-esque
rear end.
While the exterior has a cool retro vibe, the
interior leaves a lot to be desired. Regardless, the model has a digital
instrument cluster, a large infotainment system and carbon fiber trim. Drivers
will also find a three-spoke steering wheel and black leather seats with
contrast stitching. We can also see bargain bin switchgear and a drive selector
which only has setting for reverse, neutral and drive.
Technical specifications haven’t been finalized but
the company says the car has an aluminum chassis and only weighs 815
kg. This is a good thing as the four electric motors only produce 17 PS and this gives the car a maximum combined output of 66 PS.
Given the low performance figures, it’s not
surprising to learn the Luka accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9.3
seconds and only has a top speed of 146 km/h. That isn’t too
impressive but the car’s 21.9 kWh battery pack reportedly enables it to travel
up to 300 km on a single charge.
The Luka is still under development so there’s no
word on pricing or availability. However, the company says it is working on a
system that will enable the batteries to have an 80% charge in around an hour.
