For a long time, the Ground Mobility Vehicle (a
variation of the Humvee) was the U.S. Army’s go-to off-road assault vehicle.
That looks to be finally changing thanks to a new contender set to go into
production, General Dynamics’ Flyer 60 Lightweight Tactical Vehicle.
Designed to fit into a V-22 Osprey (Boeing’s VTOL
military aircraft) while maintaining a 1:1 ratio of payload to vehicle weight,
this all-terrain off-roader is built to haul gear over the most unforgiving
battlefields in the world. With a functional range of 425 miles, 195-hp, and a
70 mph top speed,
It’s also reconfigurable for multiple mission types – from a
frontline gunner, to a lightweight people carrier, to a fully armored transport,
to a rescue and recovery vehicle – and features a modular format to suit
on-the-fly alterations. Alongside the slightly larger Flyer 72, these
Lightweight Tactical Vehicles are the future of the U.S. Army’s battlefield
superiority.
