Seat has expanded its lineup to include more models
than the usual Ibiza and Leon in a very short time, to the point where it
currently has not one but two crossovers on sale: the Arona subcompact and
Ateca compact. A third one is on its way, and will be named Tarraco, after an
ancient Roman settlement in Spain.
Based on the MQB platform, it will be roughly the
size of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq and will take on the Nissan
X-Trail and Renault Koleos. Currently in prototype form, the Tarraco has been scooped while
testing at the Nurburgring. It carries a thin layer of camouflage that allows
us to see its overall shape, production-ready lighting units on both ends, as
well as the brand’s signature grille.
Seat is expected to launch it with a both petrol and
diesel engines. The petrol range is said to include the 125 PS and 150 PS versions of the 1.4-liter TSI, along with the 180 PS and 220 PS 2.0-liter TSI. At the same time, the
diesel range could include the 2.0-liter TDI mill, with 150 PS,
190 PS and 240 PS.
Joining the family further down the road could be an
electrified powertrain consisting of a petrol engine paired to an electric
motor. The Spanish automaker hasn’t announced yet when the Tarraco will make
its premiere, but info suggests we could be looking at late 2018 or early 2019.
