All 4×4 fans like a restored Mercedes G-Class, but
there’s a special appeal to those that started their lives as military
vehicles. Legacy Overland’s latest creation is a completely restored 1990
‘Wolf’ 250GD finished in Sandstorm Yellow and featuring an upgraded interior.
The meticulous restoration process included having
the chassis and various components powder coated, as well as having the engine
galvanized for protection. The seats, door cards and steering wheel are dressed
in vegan leather. The integrated roll cage is body-colored, as is the
jerrycan, the headlights and taillights are now LEDs and there’s a five-speaker
Pioneer audio system with Bluetooth.
The restored G-Wagen sits on 16-inch wheels wrapped in
315/75 Cooper off-road tires and features a military style snorkel, steel bull
guard and grille covers for the fog lights, while the chassis sits on a Raptor
suspension lift.
The powertrain remains stock from what we can tell,
meaning Mercedes’ famously reliable five-cylinder diesel engine paired to a
five-speed manual gearbox and a selectable four-wheel drive system.
Unlike the modern G-Class, which has understandably
softened up over the years, this classic Geländewagen is a rugged off-road
machine ready to become dirty and a reminder of what the G-Class started life
like.
And the best part is that, despite making some
updates, Legacy Overland respected the original character of this ex-military
G-Class and kept things (very) nice and simple.
