Toyota has
officially unveiled the 2019 86 TRD Special Edition. Billed as an “ultimate
performance” model, the car has been equipped with a number of new components
including Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers which promise to “further sharpen”
the 86’s steering and stability. The car also has exclusive 18-inch alloy
wheels that are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires.
Besides the performance changes, the car has been outfitted
with a TRD body kit which includes new bumpers, revised side skirts, a rear
diffuser and a larger spoiler. The model will be available exclusively in Raven
black and each will come with tri-color body stripes and a TRD exhaust system
featuring brushed stainless steel tips.
The styling changes continue in the cabin as
designers installed a two-tone steering wheel and matching sport seats with red
and black upholstery. Other highlights include red contrast stitching, red
seatbelts and suede-like accents. Lastly, there’s a TRD logo embroidered on the
passenger side of the dashboard.
The car has a 2.0-liter
four-cylinder boxer engine that produces up to 205 hp and 211 Nm of torque. Production will be limited to 1,418 units and pricing starts at US$ 32,420.
Buyers will more modest budgets will once again be
able to purchase the entry-level 86 and mid-grade 86 GT. Toyota declined to
mention pricing for these models, but they will go on sale in August with a
handful of new options including a Neptune paint job and a red / black interior
on the 86 GT.
While the changes are modest this year, the 2019 86
comes equipped with LED lighting units and 17-inch alloy wheels. The base model
also has sport seats, aluminum pedals, air conditioning and a 7-inch
touchscreen infotainment system.
