Porsche is
apparently working on the Cabriolet variant of the 911 GT3 Touring, with a test
car being spotted driving around completely free of camo. This will be the
first time since the original GT3 debuted back in 1999 that the hardcore model
will be offered with a soft top as well. To be honest, we still don’t know how
we feel about it.
The lack of
camouflage leaves no doubt that this is indeed a GT3 Touring with a convertible
top; the wide bodywork, the sharp bumpers, the big center-lock wheels and
massive brakes give away the different nature of this 911 Cabriolet.
The engine will of
course remain the same; a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six that produces
500 hp and 338 lb-ft of torque and can rev up to 9,000 rpm. We can only imagine
the soundtrack inside the cabin with the roof down.
Of course the
biggest question revolves around the handling; losing the roof usually means
that road manners would be compromised, due to the bigger weight and more flex
in the chassis. But this is Porsche we’re talking about, so we should wait at
least until we learn all the details of the upcoming hardcore 911 Cabriolet.
The car has been in
development alongside the 2019 911 Speedster, the company’s other hardcore
convertible. Compared to this, the Speedster will feature a unique rear panel,
a special bikini top and seating only for two inside the cabin. It will also
share the naturally aspirated flat-six of the GT3, as
well as most of its chassis settings.
The two convertible
911 models are believed to be the last ones of the current 991 generation,
before Porsche launches the all-new model next year.
