Jaguar reportedly hasn’t given
up on the idea of a high-performance sports car as Auto Express is reporting
the company is working on a radical replacement for the F-Type. Everything
should be taken with a grain of salt, but the publication claims the mid-engine
model will be launched around 2022 and could wear the J-Type moniker.
At first glance,
this seems like the company is working on a closer competitor to the Porsche
718. However, the publication says the car has much higher targets including
models from McLaren. Auto Express even quotes “high-ranking technicians working
on the project” as saying the car is being benchmarked against the Acura /
Honda NSX.
That seems like an
odd car to choose, but it’s a natural candidate as the J-Type will reportedly
have a hybrid powertrain. Specifications haven’t been finalized, but the
publication says the model will likely use a V6 engine as well as at least two
electric motors. This setup would give the all-wheel drive car a rumored output
of at least 550 hp.
That doesn’t sound
like much in era where hyper cars are producing more than 1500 hp, but it would make the model more powerful than the entry-level Audi
R8. It would also be on par with the
McLaren 570S. There are also rumors about an electric variant and Jaguar is reporting
watching the reaction to the Porsche Taycan. Of course, that particular model
is still about a year away from being launched.
