If you want a track car that flies under the radar,
get a cheap Lotus. If you want a track car that turns even more heads than a
Ferrari, get a Hummer. Wait, what? Yes, the famed Hummer H1 can be turned into
a track car and this build proves it. While an affordable Lotus would probably
be faster around a tight circuit, it’s hard to envisage many track toys that
scream for attention quite like this.
The Hummer in question was originally built way back
in 1987 and has since had its 6.6-liter LBZ Duramax engine reworked by Mil-Spec
to deliver 800 hp and 2033 Nm of torque. These figures are what
you’d expect to see from a European exotic, not a 31-year-old Hummer.
To handle the power and transmit it to the ground,
the vehicle features a Stage 5 Allison 1000 transmission. What’s more, the
entire suspension geometry was altered to allow for track use, including a
7-inch lowering kit that drops the Hummer to the floor. Other track-focused
alterations made to the vehicle include 6-piston Wilwood calipers with vented
and slotted rotors. Pirelli P Zero rubber ensures the Hummer doesn’t spin up
its tires at even the slightest touch of the throttle.
To complete the build, Mil-Spec fitted an ARB air
locking differential, roll bar, Sparco racing seats, Momo race-spec steering
wheel, and a powertrain kill switch. The tuner could have overhauled the
vehicle’s body to make it a little more aerodynamic but decided not to,
retaining the H1’s boxy looks.
