The Volvo XC90 line-up in Malaysia has been expanded to include a lower-spec XC90 T5 AWD Momentum variant. The new addition joins the existing T8 Twin Engine-equipped variants that come in Inscription and Inscription Plus trims.

Under the bonnet, the new variant sports a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 254 hp at 5,500 rpm and 350 Nm of torque from 1,500-4,800 rpm. An Aisin-sourced AW TG-81SC eight-speed automatic transmission is paired with the mill, and there’s also an all-wheel drive system.

In terms of performance, the XC90 T5 AWD will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 215 km/h. The claimed combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.9 litres per 100 km, which is more than the 2.5 litres per 100 km of the plug-in hybrid model. Also, the T8-powered cars have a higher output – 407 hp and 640 Nm – due to the hybrid electric powertrain but also an additional supercharger.

The XC90 T5 AWD comes in Momentum trim, which includes a gloss black grille with chrome frame (Inscription gets a black and matte silver grille instead). Other differences from the Inscription trim include a different rear bumper without the rectangular exhaust outlets and chrome trim around the rear fog lamp and reflector.

The Momentum also comes without side mouldings at the bottom of the doors, while the wheels are now smaller 19-inch ten spoke turbine alloys with 235/55 profile tyres. You’ll also get LED Illumination headlamps with the brand’s iconic ‘Thor’s Hammer’ daytime running lights, as well as Active High Beam and auto-levelling functions.

On the inside, the dashboard features Cross Brushed Aluminium inlays rather than Linear Walnut items with the Inscription trim. The T8’s crystal gear knob by Swedish crystal makers Orrefors has been swapped for a regular one, but the diamond-cut engine start/stop button and volume control knob remain as before.

The equipment list includes a Sensus Connect infotainment system with nine-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10-speaker, 330-watt audio system, 12.3-inch Adaptive Digital Display instrument panel, dual-zone climate control, black leather upholstery, Comfort seats, power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, second-row air-con vents (B-pillars only) and a reverse camera.

Safety and driver assistance systems are as per the T8 Twin Engine and include seven airbags, Adaptive Cruise Control, City Safety with Front Collision Warning and Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Aid, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Roll Stability Control and Hill Descent Control. There’s also the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system.

As the new entry-level variant in the XC90 range, the T5 AWD Momentum is priced at RM 373,888 on-the-road without insurance. That makes it a little more affordable than its T8-powered siblings – RM 403,088 for the T8 Inscription and RM 413,088 for the T8 Inscription Plus.
