Ford may yet revive the Boss Mustang sometime in the
future. But for fans of one of the most celebrated of Blue Oval pony cars, the
day may not come soon enough. Fortunately one company has a rather tempting
solution in store.
At the SEMA show later this month, Classic
Recreations will unveil a reborn version of the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429. And
it’s not only officially licensed, but it’s set to pack quite a punch. 815 hp, to be
specific, in the form of a massive 8.4-liter “stroker” V8,
complete with new valvetrain, engine management system, and a clutch and
flywheel from Centerforce (at whose booth it’ll be unveiled in the Las Vegas
Convention Center).
That’s a far bigger engine than the original ever
had, which is saying quite a lot. Ford produced the Boss 429 over just two
short model years in 1969 and 1970 in order to homologate its 7.0-liter
(429-cubic-inch) V8 for NASCAR. It was officially quoted to produce 375 hp, but as our friends at Motor1 point out, the actual number was likely
much higher.
Already officially licensed by Shelby, Classic
Recreations has also received Ford’s blessing to create this and other
“continuation” Mustangs – including the Boss 302 and Mach 1. This, however, may
be the most tempting yet – whether or not Dearborn ever brings back the Boss.
