Sporting cruisers with flat tracker DNA for modern
times are the 2019 Indian Motorcycle FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S, previewed ahead
of the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany. The FTR 1200 is based on Indian
Motorcycle’s championship winning FTR750 flat tracker, taking design and
styling cues from the race bike.
Coming with a new 1,203 cc V-twin with four-valves
per cylinder, the FTR 1200 produces some 120 hp at 8,250 and 115 Nm of torque
at 6,000 rpm, according to Indian, and features a 12.5:1 compression ratio.
Fuelling is by EFI with twin Mikuni throttle bodies and the engine is tuned for
low-end response.
A power assisted slipper clutch and six-speed
gearbox transmit power to the tarmac via chain final drive, giving credence to
the FTR 1200’s sporting intentions. Seat height is a ‘normal’ 805 mm with rider
on-board and suspension uses upside-down forks in front and a monoshock in the
rear.
Braking is by Brembo with twin 320 mm front discs on
the 19-inch wheel clamped by M4.32 callipers and a single rear 265 mm diameter
disc on the 18-inch rear. Fuel is carried under the seat in a 13-litre tank,
leaving the air box to be placed above the engine for optimum intake air flow.
A trellis steel frame ties all the major components
on the FTR 1200 together and an aluminium sub-frame is used to save weight.
Other engine and component mounts are also made from aluminium and dry weight
is claimed to be 221 kg, well within acceptable limits for a road-going sports
bike.
Modern rider conveniences are included with the FTR
1200 including two-channel ABS and LED lighting throughout along with cruise
control. Riders opting for the FTR 1200 S get fully-adjustable front and rear
suspension, three-mode traction control and TFT-LCD instrument panel.
There is only a single colour option for the 2019
Indian Motorcycle FTR 1200, which is Thunder Black. The FTR 1200 S, however,
comes in three paint options – Indian Motorcycle Red on Steel Grey, Titanium
Metallic over Thunder Black Pearl and Race Replica – with deliveries to Indian
Motorcycle dealer showrooms beginning mid-2019.
