The
second-generation VW Passat NMS (New Midsize Sedan) for China has been
officially unveiled. Unlike its predecessor, the all-new model switches to the VW Group’s
MQB platform and becomes bigger in the process. The sedan now measures 4,933 mm in length, making it 60-mm longer than its predecessor and
160-mm longer than the Euro-spec Passat.
The car is 1,836-mm wide, 1,469-mm high, and has a 2,871-mm wheelbase. For reference, the
distance between the axles is 80-mm longer than what the European
Passat offers. Unlike the Passat sold in Europe, however, the China-spec model
does not offer a wagon body style.
The new Passat NMS borrows cues both from the Arteon
and the Phideon full-size luxury sedan. It clearly looks more upscale than
before, both inside and out, and appears to offer generous legroom for rear
passengers. The LED headlights are standard, as are the digital instrument
panel and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Other standard features include power-adjustable
front seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, adaptive cruise control,
collision warning, and Park Assist. The seats are available with heating and
ventilation, as well as perforated leather upholstery.
At launch, the 2019 VW Passat NMS offers a 2.0-liter
TSI engine in two states of tune: 186 PS and 220 PS. Both
units feature a seven-speed DSG transmission. For some reason, the more
powerful version sports the “380 TSI” badge in China.
Also, customers will also be able to buy a
plug-in hybrid version combining a 1.4-liter TSI engine with an electric motor.
Said model will offer a system output of 211 PS and 400 Nm of combined torque.
As with its predecessor, China’s Passat will be
built by the SAIC-VW joint venture. It remains to be seen how similar North
America’s VW Passat will be to the Chinese model. The automaker announced that
the all-new model would arrive next year in the United States.
