BMW Motorrad has replaced the previous generation S 1000 RR with the
2019 BMW Motorrad S 1000 RR. BMW’s 2019 superbike comes with a completely new
engine and suspension with a design brief of making it faster on the track,
lighter and easier to control.
The new inline-four power plant in the S 1000 RR now
makes 207 hp at 13,500 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 11,000 rpm, up from the
previous model’s 199 hp at 13,500 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 10,500 rpm. It
should be noted that Motorrad has developed a very linear torque curve for this
motor, with 100 Nm of torque being available from 5,500 to 14,500 rpm.
With an eye to performance gains from weight loss,
the new engine is 4 kg lighter and comes with variable valve timing and stroke
on the intake. As for overall weight, the 2019 S 1000 RR has lost 10 kg over
the previous bike’s 208 kg, coming in 11 kg lighter at 197 kg.
This includes weight savings from an exhaust system
that is 1.3 kg lighter and adding the M Package drops overall weight down to
193.5 kg. That BMW Motorrad is serious about saving weight can be seen in the
redesigned Full Floater Pro rear suspension, which saves 300 grammes from the
last generation.
The new suspension also places more of the load on
the frame and engine itself, with force applied directly to the engine via the
shortest possible force vector. BMW Motorrad says the new S 1000 RR has
significantly better riding dynamics with new riding geometry and weight
optimisation.
Dynamic Damping Control, Motorrad’s version of
electronic semi-active suspension, is now an optional item for the S 1000 RR.
Now featuring new valve and control technology, there is a shim package
available for aggressive track use.
A total of seven ride modes are available for the S
1000 RR – four as standard and three more with the optional Pro Modes package.
The standard modes are Rain, Road, Dynamic and Race while the Pro Mode module
adds three ride modes that are user customisable for Dynamic Traction Control
DTC, ABS and wheelie detection as well as torque delivery and engine braking.
Also available with the Pro Modes module is launch
control and pit lane speed limiter. Standard fitment on the S 1000 RR is HP
Shift Assistant Pro which gives up-and-down quickshifting in a reversible shift
pattern for race use.
Inside the cockpit is a 6.5-inch TFT-LCD screen with
four display option – Pure Ride for road use while Core 1 and 2 mimic an
analogue display and Core 3 uses a bar graph display. There are two colour
options for the 2019 S 1000 RR, which are Racing Red and Motorsport.
