The special heritage livery set to be used by the
2019 IMSA Acura Team Penske ARX-05 prototypes during this year’s IMSA
WeatherTech SportsCar Championship has been unveiled – and it pays homage to
the brand’s past.
The white, orange, and black colors have been
inspired by the liveries used by Acura‘s IMSA prototypes that won back-to-back
championships from 1991-93. The design of the livery was handled by Acura
Executive Creative Director Dave Marek.
The successful race cars from the 1991-1993 seasons
utilized a modified engine from the first-generation NSX and were driven by
Parker Johnstone, Wayne Taylor, and Steve Cameron to three consecutive
Manufacturers’ Championships in the IMSA Camel GTP Lights series.
Acura unveiled the current ARX-05 Prototype back in
August 2017. The racer uses a twin-turbo AR35TT engine that’s loosely based on
the unit found in the Acura MDX, TLX, and RLX. Underpinning the racer is an
Oreca 07 chassis with a bespoke Acura bodywork.
This year’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship kicks
off on January 26 with the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway.
