The boxy Mercedes GLB was spotted during a
fuel stop in Sweden where Mercedes-Benz engineers are subjecting it to cold
weather testing. The photographers managed to take some clear shots of the
exterior from up close, as well as the best snaps of the SUV’s interior yet.
The dashboard looks very similar to
the one in the new A-Class and B-Class, which is not surprising given that the
GLB shares its platform with the compact hatchback/sedan and MPV. However, a
notable difference is the center console that appears more prominent than in
the A-Class and B-Class.
The rest of the dash, with the big screens,
three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, and turbine-style air vents, looks
very familiar. Obviously, Mercedes’ latest infotainment system, the MBUX, is
present in the GLB as well.
On the outside, the Mercedes-Benz GLB looks
significantly bulkier than the A-Class and even the B-Class. The boxy
appearance sends the message that the GLB is more than just a high-riding
hatchback such as the GLA. Expect the new SUV to share engine options with the
A-Class and B-Class, including a wide selection of gasoline and diesel power
plants in Europe.
The U.S. range will be gasoline-powered only,
although an electrified powertrain is said to be in the works. As more recent
spy shots have shown, the GLB will also be available as a Mercedes-AMG GLB 35
version, powered by a 301 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
engine. Mercedes is expected to lift the veils off the all-new GLB in
mid-2019.
