Revealed by the crossover’s iDrive infotainment system, the image
shows the upcoming BMW X3 M will have an aggressive front fascia with a
black twin kidney grille. Bigger changes occur further below as the
high-performance crossover has a front new bumper with large air intakes that
feature honeycomb mesh inserts. We can also see a black bar above the central
air intake as well as scoops out near the outer edges.
Moving further back, designers installed front
fender vents and sportier side skirts. The model has also been equipped with
aerodynamic mirror caps, five-spoke alloy wheels and shadow line trim around
the windows. Last but not least, the roof rails have been removed to improve
aerodynamics.
While the images only show the front three quarters
of the X3 M, previous spy photos have revealed the model will have a modified
rear bumper and a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system. The crossover will also
have a unique rear spoiler and what appears to be a small diffuser.
Besides giving us an undisguised glimpse the X3 M,
the latest round of photos reveals the crossover’s digital instrument cluster.
Boasting digital X3 M badging, the cluster has a speedometer that tops out at 330 km/h.
BMW has been tight-lipped about performance
specifications, but the company has already confirmed the X3 M will have a
“newly developed straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology
and high-revving characteristics.” Given the latest rumors about the 2020 BMW
M3, the X3 M could have a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six that develops up to
474 hp.
The engine will likely be paired to an eight-speed
automatic transmission and an M xDrive all-wheel drive system that is similar
to the one used on the M5. BMW has already confirmed the latter and promised
the model will have “maximum traction” as well as “extremely dynamic handling
characteristics.” Other performance features will include an active M
differential and a sport-tuned suspension. BMW hasn’t said when or where the
model will be unveiled, but the crossover should make an appearance at an auto
show later this year.
