Maruti Suzuki will introduce its all-new E15A 1.5L
diesel engine in the Ciaz next month. While an official announcement is eagerly
awaited, Team-BHP forum member Leoshashi has already revealed a few
details. Citing an undisclosed source who has seen the yet-to-be-announced 1.5L
DDiS 225 diesel engine, the forum member says that this engine offers much
improved NVH performance compared to the existing 1.3L DDiS 200 unit. The new
engine, developed in-house, has a Variable Geometry Turbocharger. The aluminium
block unit offers “awesome drivability”, with turbo lag “non-existent."
The E15A engine is a four-cylinder unit with a
displacement of 1,498 cc. It produces 95 PS at 4,000 rpm and 225 Nm of torque
at 1,500-2,500 rpm. It is matched with a brand-new 6-speed manual transmission
- the first for a Maruti. The fuel economy rating (ARAI) of the Maruti Ciaz
fitted with this engine is 26.82 km/l. In another recent revelation, it came to
light that the 1.5L diesel engine model doesn't feature a mild-hybrid system.
The Maruti Ciaz fitted with one of the existing
engines (K15B 1.5L petrol and D13A 1.3L diesel) is available in all the four
grades, namely Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. The E15A 1.5L diesel engine option
is planned for only the Delta, Zeta and Alpha grades, maybe because the
entry-level Sigma grade cannot absorb the higher cost.
The D13A engine will remain available in the Maruti
Ciaz until the end of the year. The E15A engine will get a BSVI upgrade around
the same time. Following the Ciaz, the Maruti Ertiga will gain the E15A engine
option in the very same month. Further ahead, expect this engine under the hood
of the Maruti S-Cross.
