Volvo Trucks has just delivered its first
all-electric models to select customers in Sweden, sending a refuse truck to
waste and recycling company Renova, plus a distribution truck to a logistics
company and partner haulier TGM.
As of right now, this is just a small sample size,
as series production for Volvo’s FL Electric and FE Electric trucks will
commence in the second half of the year. European markets will be the first to
welcome these zero-emission haulers on the road.
Drivers who will go on to operate these trucks have
already had a chance to test drive them prior to delivery, as part of their
operational training. “The drivers were particularly impressed with the
responsive driveline, delivering fast and seamless acceleration, and the low
noise level,” added Alm, who also looks forward to Volvo reducing the
“environmental and climate impact” of their diesel and gas-powered trucks.
In the end, the lack of engine noise and exhaust
emissions should offer better working conditions for drivers, to go with the
obvious benefits for the environment. As for how capable the two
all-electric trucks are, the FL Electric has a GVW (gross vehicle weight)
capacity of 16 tonnes, while the more powerful FE Electric can
haul 27 tonnes.
