Skoda is getting ready to roll out the Scala
hatchback across European markets and has just released a big photo gallery
revealing every detail of its Golf-sized model. The first Skoda model based on VW
Group’s MQB-A0 platform bets on efficient packaging, high functionality, as
well as new technology and connectivity features to make a name for itself in
the highly competitive European C-segment.
Styled in accordance with the brand’s new design
language, the Scala looks like a cross between a typical five-door hatchback
and a wagon. The car’s appearance is enhanced by the full LED headlights and
taillights, dynamic rear indicators, and alloy wheels measuring up to 18
inches.
It is 4,362 mm long, 1,793 mm wide and 1,471 mm high. It also has a wheelbase of 2,649 mm,
which allows for 73 mm of knee room in the rear and 982 mm of rear headroom. Skoda says these are benchmarks in the segment. The boot is
generous too, offering a cargo capacity of 467 liters with all
seats in place and up to 1,410 liters with the rear seats folded
down (60:40).
The Scala offers several
Simply Clever features that make life easier for the driver and passengers.
Highlights include the power tailgate including Tip-To-Close function, an
electrically retractable tow bar, ice scraper with a tire tread depth gauge and
integrated funnel in the lid of the windscreen washer tank.
The interior is dominated by the free-standing
touchscreen measuring from 6.5 inches to 9.2 inches depending on the trim level
and the (optional) 10.25-inch digital instrument panel. The Scala also offers
ambient lighting, colored contrasting stitching on the seats, individual
decorative trims, and more. Comfort is enhanced by optional extras such as the
heated windscreen and steering wheel.
The engine lineup consists of three TSI turbocharged
gasoline engines and one turbo diesel. There’s an entry-level 1.0-liter TSI
three-cylinder making 95 PS, a mid-range 1.0-liter TSI with 115 PS and a top-of-the-line 1.5-liter TSI four-cylinder that makes 150 PS.
From the fourth quarter of 2019, the range will also
get a 90 PS 1.0-liter G-Tec unit that runs on natural gas (CNG). Finally,
the 1.6-liter TDI four-cylinder diesel is rated at 115 PS and 250 Nm of torque. Transmission options include five- and six-speed manual
units as well as a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The Scala is the first Skoda to
get the optional Sport Chassis Control suspension, which lowers the ride height
by 15 mm and offers Normal or Sport driving modes.
Sales of the 2019 Scala kick off this month across
Europe and from May in the UK, with the first deliveries following in the
summer. Prices start from € 21,450 in Germany and £ 16,595 in the UK.
