Ever since BMW launched the all-new 3 Series G20
last year brand aficionados started wondering what the two-door version will
look like. We’re obviously talking about the next-generation 4 Series, which has
only been spied in convertible guise so far. We can now bring you the first spy
shots of the two-door coupe version as a test prototype was snapped by our
photographers on a car transporter.
Thankfully, it didn’t feature shape-distorting
plastic camo so what you see in the photos is what you’ll get — this is the
finished item with the final production headlights and taillights. Actually,
the development seems to be more advanced than in the case of the drop-top
version which still wears provisional lights.
The shape of the 2020 BMW 4 Series Coupe does send
an 8 Series vibe, especially when seen from the front. Obviously, the 4 is not
that long but that will play in its favor when it comes to agility. The
elongated headlights and taillights with a similar signature seem inspired by
the 8 Series as well.
We don’t have photos of the new 4 Series Coupe’s
interior yet but previous spy shots of the 4 Series Convertible revealed that
it looks very similar to the 3 Series. The 4 Series Coupe, Convertible
and Gran Coupe will source all engine and transmission options from the new 3
Series. Expect four- and six- turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, as well
as a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The xDrive AWD system will be available or
standard for the more powerful engines.
Word on the street is that even the range-topping
2020 BMW M4 performance model will offer switchable all-wheel-drive. We’ll
learn more about that next year when most of the redesigned 4 Series lineup is
expected to debut.
