The 2020 Corvette Convertible wasn’t the only future
model teased last night as Chevrolet also previewed the upcoming C8.R. Set to replace C7.R, which racked
up more than a dozen wins including a class victory at Le Mans, the C8.R will
become the company’s newest race car.
Little is known about the model, but the teaser
shows it will closely resemble the coupe. However, the race car has been
equipped with a quick release hood and additional lights for endurance racing. The C8.R also has larger side
scoops and what appears to be a lightweight windscreen. We can also see new
side mirrors, a prominent rear wing and a massive diffuser. There’s also an
extra scoop above the mid-mounted engine.
The interior has been gutted and replaced by one
specifically designed for racing. As you can see, the car has a Corvette Racing
steering wheel with at least 18 different buttons and control knobs. The model also has two digital
displays including a digital instrument cluster. Other highlights include a
roll cage and a HANS-compatible driver’s seat. There’s also a unique center
stack with an assortment of buttons and controls.
The C8.R is rumored to adopt a turbocharged engine,
but nothing is official as of yet. Regardless, the C7.R was developed alongside
the Corvette Z06 and featured a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 engine. The 2020 Corvette Stingray, on
the other hand, has a 6.2-liter LT2 V8 that produces up to 495 hp and 637 Nm of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed dual
clutch transmission which enables the car to rocket from 0-96 km/h in less than three seconds.
