The most powerful street-legal Ford ever made its
public debut last week during the UK event, prior to its launch that’s
scheduled for this fall. The GT500 will reportedly have a US$ 73,995 starting price in the United
States, destination charge and gas guzzler tax included. That’s about as much
as the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, which is US$ 500 less expensive
and more powerful, with its 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 kicking out 808 PS and 956 Nm of torque.
The 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500, on the other hand, is
equipped with a 5.2-liter, supercharged V8 that produces 771 PS and 847 Nm of torque, but despite the power deficit, needs a
Redeye-matching 3.5 seconds for the 0-100 km/h acceleration. The
quarter-mile run is estimated to take less than 11 seconds – again, roughly the
same as its direct competitor from FCA, which can do it in 10.8 seconds, at 211
km/h.
With more power than some current (hugely more
expensive) exotics and the theoretical ability to put them in their corner, the
Mustang Shelby GT500 looks to be a game changer.
