The new,
mid-engined C8 Corvette signifies the most radical shift in the model’s
history, but more novelties are on their way. The new generation Corvette will
launch with a naturally aspirated, 495hp 6.2-liter V8 in the Stingray, but GM
is planning to add electrified powertrains to the range in the near future.
Sources from within
GM have confirmed to Autocar that both the LT2 engine and the new chassis have
been designed with electrification in mind. Company insiders suggested that
future versions of the C8 will include mild- and plug-in hybrid versions, with
GM even considering a full electric version.
When asked if an
electrified Corvette could feature a mild-hybrid system or a proper electric motor
on the front axle to provide all-wheel drive, an unnamed project member simply
said “you would not look stupid if you said that.” GM President Mark Reuss
confirmed that the platform of the new ‘Vette has been indeed designed to host
a number of different solutions. His answer on whether The General is actually
working on a full-electric version of the C8 Corvette was more non-committal:
“We’ll see. Stay tuned.”
The future for the
C8 Corvette looks pretty bright, especially when you consider that GM plans to
offer the base model at under UA$ 60,000, which if it drives as it should, will
make it the best bang for your buck in the sports car market.
