Audi has revealed that the next-generation R8 will adopt electrification, but has yet to decide exactly what type of powertrain it will use. During a recent event in Europe, Audi Sport managing director Oliver Hoffman told Motoring that the German company has a number of interesting concepts for the next R8 in the works and confirmed the supercar won’t be powered solely by an internal combustion engine.

The R8 has been the halo supercar for the German car manufacturer ever since it was introduced back in 2006. The second-generation model was launched in 2015, and while the basic design of the car hasn’t changed dramatically, ii doesn’t look dated at all. With this in mind, Hoffman revealed that Audi Sport has plans to continue updating the current R8 range with new and exciting models before a successor is launched in a few years’ time, perhaps in 2023.
