Following the i30 N hatchback in 2017, Hyundai
expanded its N line-up with the i30 N Fastback last year. Now, the company is
readying an N variant of the third-gen i20 due next year using the second-gen
model. Recently, a prototype of the i20 N was spied in a parking lot in South
Korea.
The test mule bears all the signatures of a sportier
and faster version of the regular i20 - bigger wheels, more serious-looking
brakes, lower ride height and twin exhaust tailpipes. Inside, there's the same
gearshifter as the i30 N. The engine lying under the hood is unknown, but it's
linked to a 6-speed manual transmission. The modifications would include a more
aerodynamic body, a stiffer suspension setup and a more direct ratio steering
as well.
The third-gen i20 has been caught behind lenses in
the past, and it is set to arrive in India in early 2020. Hyundai plan to
launch N division in India is out in the open now, and hence India too is
likely to get the i20 N variant, albeit in a less sophisticated form compared
to other markets. Internationally, the 1.6L T-GDI engine is expected to power
the i20 N. This engine's top power output will reach around 200 PS in order to
compete with class hitters like the Volkswagen Polo GTI and the Ford Fiesta ST.
In India, Hyundai will most likely slap on the 1.0L
T-GDI engine to keep the costs under check. This engine is locally manufactured
and is currently available in the Hyundai Venue. Of the 100 PS and 120 PS
versions, expect the 120 PS version in this hatchback. While it can be paired
with a 7-speed DCT, a 6-speed MT could be kept standard to keep the pricing
more affordable.
