The Japanese motorcycle makers seem to be returning
to the concept of UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle). To the uninitiated, UJM
was a term used by American motoring scribes back in the 70s due to the rise of
similar Japanese standard motorcycle by the Big Four! But why are we talking
about this here? Well, a new report from GreatBiker says that Honda is working
on a new touring-centric 150 cc product called 'CB150M'.
This news comes days after reports came in of Yamaha
working on new entry-level adventure tourer – Yamaha MT-15 Tracer. Honda had
earlier showcased the CB125M concept at EICMA 2018 along with the CB125X. The
report adds that Honda will be launching a 150 cc version called CB150M in
Thailand. Europe will be getting the production version of CB125M based on the
neo-cafe racer CB125R.
The Honda CB150M will be based on the Honda CB150R
Streetster which in turn originated from the HonddaCBR150R. The upcoming Honda
CB150M will use 41 mm upside-down fork up front which promises long travel.
Rear suspension will include a monoshock unit with adjustable preload. Besides
that, the Honda CB150M will get a wide handlebar positioned high up for a
comfortable and commanding riding position.
The report also adds that the development of the bike
has inputs from Honda’s Italian R&D team. Also, the 149 cc mill from
CBR150R will be a DOHC, liquid-cooled mill. In the faired version, this engine
can produce 17.1 PS of power and 14.4 Nm of torque. Mated to this powerplant is
a 6-speed gearbox. Putting anchors to the upcoming Honda CB150M will be disc
brakes at both ends.
The production version of the Honda CB150M (and
Honda CB125M) will feature a more conventional exhaust canister instead of the
SC-Project unit seen on the concept. This will allow Honda to keep production
costs under check. Besides that, the slick tyres will be swapped with something
more road-centric.
