Even without any options added, Renault’s
record-breaking Megane RS Trophy-R is insanely expensive, with the automaker
announcing a £ 51,140 (US$ 62,210) starting price in the UK. That’s almost twice as much as
the regular Megane RS, which starts at £ 27,835 (US$ 33,860), and £ 19,305
(US$ 23,484) more than the RS Trophy. Heck, even the Porsche 718 Cayman is
£6,350 ($7,725/€6,930) cheaper than the French hot hatch.
With the mid-range Carbon Wheel Pack, which adds the
19-inch Carbon Revolution wheels, providing a weight saving of 8 kg in
total, you’ll have to pay £ 63,140 (US$ 76,808). But that’s not all,
because the Nurburgring Record Pack, which brings carbon ceramic front brakes
with gold calipers and a dynamic air intake in the lower front bumper, will
bump the cost to £ 72,140 (US$ 87,756), or just £ 3,208 (US$ 3,902)
shy of the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4.
If money is no concern, then you can further spec
the RS Trophy-R with other accessories, such as the six-point harnesses for the
Sabelt seats, lightweight lithium-ion battery that saves another 4.5 kg and ducting pipe for the air intake that feeds into the engine’s intake
system.
Spotting the fastest front-wheel drive production
car at the Nurburgring and Spa Francorchamps on the road is going to be tricky,
as it’s limited to 500 units globally, including 32 allocated to the United
Kingdom.
All of them feature weight savings and aerodynamic
improvements, while retaining the Megane RS Trophy’s 300 PS,
1.8-liter turbocharged engine. Pricing in its home market, France, will kick off at
€ 55,000 (US$ 61,305) when it goes on sale before the end of the year.
