The wait for an all-new 2020 Land
Rover Defender is almost over and we say that because the latest generation of
the iconic off-roader won’t be arriving in dealerships immediately. The first customers able to order
the 2020 Defender are the British, who can do it as of right now, with
deliveries expected early next year. Like in the rest of the world, the
off-roader will debut in the UK in 110 guise and five trim levels: Defender, S,
SE, HSE, First Edition, and top-of-the-range Defender X.
Pricing starts at £ 45,240 (US$ 55,930)
for the entry-level Defender model equipped with the D200 2.0-liter turbo
diesel engine that makes 200 PS. All models get an eight-speed auto
with a two-speed transfer case, AWD system, and Terrain Response.
For the money, customers will get plenty of standard
features. On the outside, those include a heated windscreen, power-adjustable
side mirrors with heating, automatic headlights and rain sensing wipers, LED
headlights, LED taillights, 18-inch steel wheels with all-season tires, and
body color roof.
The list of standard interior features consists of
8-way heated semi-powered front seats, two-zone climate control, manually
adjustable steering column, Light Oyster Morzine headlining, auto-dimming
interior rear view mirror, 40:20:40 folding rear seats (Defender 110), 40:20:40
fixed rear seats (Defender 90) and more.
On the tech front, the base 2020 Defender gets
goodies such as a 10-inch touch screen infotainment system with Android Auto
and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Connected Navigation Pro, DAB radio, 180-watt
sound system, and analogue dials with central TFT display, among other things.
Standard driver assistance tech includes a Tyre
Pressure Monitoring System, Emergency Braking, 3D Surround Camera, ClearSight
Ground View, cruise control and speed limiter, driver condition monitor, lane
keep assist, 360 Park Aid, Wade Sensing, Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive
Speed Limiter.
The most expensive model in Britain is the range-topping
P400 six-cylinder mild hybrid which kicks off at a whopping £ 78,800 (US$ 97,400).
In fairness, it only comes in the top-of-the-range X trim level. Exact prices
for the short-wheelbase Defender 90 haven’t been set yet but Land Rover
estimates a base price of around £ 40,000 (US$ 49,500) while the Defender
Commercial workhorse is expected to start at approximately £ 35,000 (US$ 43,300).
In the United States, the 2020 Defender 110 in base
trim starts at US$ 49,900 with the P300 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
gasoline engine rated at 296 hp. The P400 mild-hybrid six-cylinder
model is priced at $62,250 in SE grade and tops out at US$ 80,900 in range-topping
X grade. U.S. prices exclude a US$ 1,025 destination and delivery fee. The new
Defender 110 will arrive Stateside in spring 2020 while the Defender 90 is
expected later on next year.
