Since the last sighting in April
this year, the automaker has unveiled the GLB compact SUV which shares its
bodywork with the EQB, so Mercedes decided there was no need for the
all-electric version to keep the heavy camouflage anymore. As you can see in these fresh, more revealing
images, the Mercedes EQB is essentially an electrified GLB. It uses the same
body with only minor updated details such as the closed-off grille, unique
bumpers, new headlights and updated graphics for the taillights.
Other modifications compared to the GLB include the
EV-specific alloys and lack of exhaust pipes as well as the fact that the area
for the license plate has been moved to the rear bumper — likely to make room
for an EQC-inspired light strip uniting the taillights.
The EQB is expected to launch sometime in 2020,
joining Mercedes’ EQ family which already includes the larger EQC SUV and EQV
MPV. The new model will use the same Electric Vehicle Architecture II (EVA II)
as the upcoming EQA compact hatch and shall offer several lithium-ion battery
pack options, ranging from 60 to 110 kWh.
Real-world driving range is expected to be at least
400 km with the largest battery. Three electric motors will be
available, with 201 hp, 200 kW (268 hp) and 250 kW
(335 hp). Given that the batteries will take up significant space in
the vehicle floor, it’s unclear whether the EQB will retain the GLB’s
seven-seat option.
