Toyota introduced the 2020 86
Hakone Edition earlier this year, and now the company has detailed the changes
to the rest of the lineup. The big news this year, besides the special edition, is the new TRD
Handling Package. Available exclusively on the entry-level 86 with the manual
transmission, the package includes a number of goodies from last year’s 86 TRD
Special Edition.
Highlights include a Brembo braking system with
discs that measure 326 mm)up front and 316 mm out
back. The package also adds Sachs dampers and 18-inch alloy wheels that are
wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.
Inside, the ancient infotainment system has been
replaced by a new 7-inch Multimedia Audio system with Android Auto and Apple
CarPlay compatibility. It features Bluetooth connectivity, USB media and USB
charging ports as well as Clari-Fi technology which promises to make
“compressed digital music formats sound more open and natural.” The system also
pumps out sound to an eight-speaker audio system. The infotainment system should be
a huge improvement over its predecessor which was described as something
straight out of a decade old Crutchfield catalog by a co-driver on a recent
road trip.
There doesn’t appear to be any other changes and
power continues to be provided by a familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer
engine that develops 205 hp and 211 Nm of torque
when connected to a six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic is also available,
but it comes with a lower output of 200 hp and 204
Nm of torque.
The 2020 Toyota 86 will go on sale in the United
States this fall and pricing will start under US$ 27,000.
