Volkswagen fans are eagerly awaiting the unveiling
of the modern-day Mircobus, but that isn’t the only van the company is working
on. Far from it, as spy photographers have snapped new pictures of the seventh-generation
Transporter. Known as the T7, the redesigned van has an evolutionary design but
adopts a flatter and more rounded hood. The streamlined design continues
further down, where we can also see a prominent Volkswagen logo and slimmer
headlights.
The massive grille of the T6.1 has been jettisoned
in favor of a more compact design that can be discerned even under the heavy
camouflage. Additional details are hard to make out, but there’s a slender air
intake beneath the brand’s logo.
Moving further back, the van has a boxy design that
is instantly recognizable. However, there are a handful of changes including
new door mirrors and a more pronounced character line. The roof also slopes to
the rear end where meets a large spoiler. Speaking of the rear, the model has a
more shapely tailgate and what appears to be horizontal taillights as well as a
redesigned, yet still evolutionary, bumper.
Little else is known about the T7 at this point, but
it’s expected to be offered with an assortment of diesel engines. There could
also be a plug-in hybrid variant and possibly an electric option. The latter
remains unconfirmed, but ABT already introduced its e-Transporter at the Geneva
Motor Show earlier this year and VW is betting big on electrification, so we
wouldn’t bet against an all-electric T7 popping up later.
