Chinese automaker Geely showed us an unusual design
study called the Icon last spring. Back then, the company said it was simply
meant to provide an illustration of what Geely cars might look like in the
future. Technical specs and production prospects were simply not a discussion
matter. Imagine our surprise when we heard that the Icon was going to become a
mass-produced car after all.
Perhaps even more interestingly, these official
photos seem to testify that the production SUV is only slightly different from
its concept version. There are conventional side mirrors instead of cameras,
the glass panes on the doors now have bezels, and there are practical railings
on the roof – but that would be it for the changes. The slide-out door handles and
the sculpted sides are still present.
An unconfirmed source claims that the Geely Icon
will be closest to the Binyue in terms of architecture and tech. This likely
means that it will be based on the BMA chassis and come powered by a 1.5-liter,
turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 177 hp at its disposal.
Gelly promises to announce the remaining details
before the end of the year.
