The new AMG 53 Coupe may be the most exciting new
GLE variant to launch at the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show but another new model
unveiled at the event is the GLE Plug-In Hybrid. Officially dubbed the
Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 de 4MATIC, the vehicle is powered by a 2.0-liter
four-cylinder diesel and an electric motor receiving its juice from a 31.2 kWh
battery pack. All up, the powertrain delivers 315 HP and 700 Nm of
torque.
The plug-in hybrid SUV sprints from naught to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and tops out at 210 km/h. Of more
importance is the fact that the GLE Plug-In Hybrid can travel for up
to 106 km on electric power alone in the New European Driving
Cycle and 90-99 km under WLTP testing.
Visually, the GLE 350 de 4MATIC isn’t the most
interesting GLE to look at, particularly when compared to the AMG-branded
models. Up front you will find large fake air intakes below the grille as well
as headlights with nicely-incorporated daytime running lights. Spin around to
the rear and you will see angular taillights with unique graphics.
