Last week, Volkswagen of Brazil confirmed plans for
a new crossover dubbed the ‘Urban Coupe’, which is set to be unveiled next
spring before going into production at the Anchieta plant in the same year. The German automaker will also
build this new model in Europe come 2021, giving global markets the chance to
welcome yet another reasonably practical sloped roofline crossover to their
shores – at least that’s what the teaser image suggests.
Aside from what it is and what it’s overall shape
might look like, there isn’t much else we know about the ‘Urban Coupe’, other
than the fact that it’s based on VW’s MQB platform and that it is 100%
developed in Brazil.
VW will have invested no fewer than seven billion
BRL (1.5 billion euros) in Brazil, between 2016 and 2020, for the development
of new products, digitalization and technological innovations, while also
attempting to strengthen the development of local products for both South
American customers as well as ones across the globe.
Under its current strategy, VW has launched a
product offensive with 20 new models for Brazil, which is identified as a key
market in the region.
