The mid-life update of the G30 5-Series will bring
BMW’s latest tech features, including a more modern and wider 12.3-inch digital
instrument cluster as seen in other models like the 8-Series, as well as a new
-and slightly larger- touchscreen display for the infotainment system. We also notice a set of new
control buttons on the steering wheel but other than that, the interior of the
facelifted 5-Series looks the same with the current model. That’s not a
surprise, given BMW’s strategy of really subtle changes when it comes to the
LCI facelifts.
On the outside, the updated 5-Series is set to
receive a new fascia that includes slimmer LED headlights, alongside a more
pronounced kidney grille and a redesigned bumper. The rear will also receive a
similar treatment, featuring new thinner taillights and a re-styled bumper.
The engine range will largely remain the same, with
BMW expected to fit a particulate filter to its petrol units and introduce more
electrified versions. Rumor has it that the Bavarians are planning to add a
more powerful six-cylinder 388 HP plug-in hybrid variant to sit above the
existing 530e. BMW has already fitted a 48-volt mild-hybrid system on the
four-cylinder diesel 520d models.
The facelift will also apply to the
range-topping M5, which has been spotted during development drives on public
roads. From what we’ve seen so far, BMW wants to make the 5-Series look a bit
more dynamic and distinctive, as the current model has been criticized for its
rather blunt looks.
The facelifted BMW 5-Series is expected to debut
sometime in late 2019 or early 2020.
