The long-awaited eighth-generation 2020 VW Golf is
set to premiere on October 24, Motor1 reports. Volkswagen had originally
intended on unveiling the new Golf at last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show but
instead decided to give the all-electric ID.3 all of the limelight. It is
reported that the Golf’s October 24 reveal will take place in Wolfsburg,
Germany and likely be streamed online so Golf fans around the world can tune
in.
Despite Volkswagen’s best attempts to keep the new
Golf under wraps in recent months, our spy photographers have snapped a handful
of prototypes testing in various stages of undress. Last month we had the
opportunity to see the 2020 Golf in GTE plug-in hybrid guise with virtually no
camouflage.
VW Golf buyers looking for the most fuel-efficient
model they can find will likely opt for the GTE as the all-electric e-Golf will
no longer be built to make room for the ID.3 in VW’s family. We understand the
Golf GTE’s plug-in hybrid powertrain will be the same system as the Passat GTE
meaning a 154 hp 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired
with a 113 hp electric motor and a 13 kWh battery pack delivering a combined
215 hp and 400 Nm of torque.
The new Golf will be sold in a number of different
guises including as a station wagon/estate. High-performance GTI and Golf R
variants will launch in the coming years.
